A Brief History of St George's

In May 1929 the need for a new Church in the newly developing area of Tolworth was first suggested, and in December of that year the St Matthew's Church Council resolved to purchase a plot of land.

In February 1930 an appeal for £3,000 was launched and in the first 6 months over £800 was raised.  People living in the new area supported the venture enthusiastically, and by 1933 about 250 people were giving regularly to the Fund.

Further donations, a grant and a loan allowed building to commence later that year. In December Messrs Limpus and Sons commenced work on the site, erecting a single building which was capable of being used as a Hall or Church. The total cost was £5,354.

The Church was originally a dual purpose building, being both a church and a hall, with an altar and sanctuary at the north end, and a stage and organ at the south end. The Church was consecrated on 12th June 1934 by the then Bishop of Southwark, Dr Parsons.

In 1950 the Church Committee began to look seriously at replacing the existing building with a traditional style building, but after 3 years of investigation, and discovering the cost would be over £50,000 the proposal was dropped.

The Church building originally served a dual purpose as a Worship Centre on Sundays and a Community Centre on weekdays. This presented a number of difficulties however, and eventually a separate Church Hall was built on the east side of the Church following a fund-raising campaign where people were encouraged to buy a brick for 2/6d. Over 360 people queued to witness 'their' brick laid beside the foundation stone. The building was dedicated in 1957.

In 1980 it was agreed that an area of land to the east of the Church, including the Church Hall, would be sold for development as housing. The area developed is now called St George's Gardens. The money raised by this project was used to finance the building of a new Church Centre.

The Church Centre was completed and dedicated on 17th May 1981 and is now widely used by various groups in the local area.

In 1997, following much discussion in the parish, the 'Moving Forward' document was produced which helped clarify the relationship with St Matthew's within the parish.

The Jubilee Room is an extension to the side of the Church which was added in 2002. It provides a facility for small group meetings.

St George's, with God's help, continues to work to be an effective centre of Christian worship, witness and ministry in our community.
